The most inspiring company in the US? It's Apple

A recent survey has found that Apple is regarded as the most inspiring company in the United States.

We?ve known for a while that consumers are infatuated with Apple and its products. That was confirmed Monday when the company announced that it sold more than 5 million units of its new iPhone 5 since the product launched three days earlier. And on Tuesday a Georgia-based brand consulting firm dubbed the technology giant America?s most inspiring company.

Performance Inspired, Inc., an Atlanta consulting and training firm that helps organizations elevate performance through the science of inspiration, surveyed 2,175 consumers to identify America?s 25 most inspiring companies.

Conducted online, the survey asked respondents which five companies they find most inspirational, and why. It also asked them to describe their most recent encounter with each company.

The goal of the survey was to find a correlation between successful companies and those that inspire their consumers. ?According to our latest research, consumers are not only feeling inspired by certain businesses, but are acting inspired by spending more with these companies while evangelizing to others about their inspiring experience,? said Terry Barber, chief inspiration officer for Performance Inspired. ?We now see there is a validated set of drivers to inspiration and when these drivers are activated, it elevates employee engagement that shows up in the customer experience.?

For the second consecutive year, Apple is at the top of the heap. ?Apple is the most inspiring again this year because it has become a part of the consumer?s personal identity,? Barber said. ?Consumers wrote comments such as: ?Apple makes me feel more creative,? and ?Apple makes me feel entrepreneurial.? People were also inspired by the company?s ability to continue to innovate even without Steve Jobs at the helm.?

Barber said Apple fans also said they felt like they were a part of a special community. ?Some wrote in about how ?they? felt victorious after the settlement between Apple and Samsung,? he added.

Other companies on the list, like Target (No. 3) and Johnson & Johnson (No. 22), earned their rankings through global or community improvement plans. For a decade, Target has donated 5 percent of its pretax profits to the cities where it operates. In 2005, Target formed a partnership with the Salvation Army, creating an online donation system to help needy families.

Some big companies, often seen as profit-hungry behemoths, ranked well in the survey, too. Wal-Mart, for instance, earned the No. 2 spot?because respondents believe company keeps its promises and is authentic. In the branding firm?s analysis, Performance Inspired speculates that customers especially like Wal-Mart?s competitive prices and its commitment to giving back to the community. ?For many respondents, Wal-Mart was also seen as a much welcome source of employment for seniors,? Barber added. ?There was also very much of a polarization on the perception of how Wal-Mart treats its employees. The vast majority of negative comments regarding the company were on this issue. Yet, some of the more affirming comments came from people who identified themselves as either present or past employees of Wal-Mart.?

Respondents also liked companies that stick to their values. Despite it being at the center of controversy this year, Chick-fil-A, a fast-food chain with more than 1,600 locations, earned the No. 7 spot.

?Over the last three years since we?ve been doing this research, Chick-fil-A has always shown up as being very inspiring, so it just makes sense that there is a lot of equity and trust built up here and no doubt, they are leveraging some of that good equity during these times,? Barber said.

The company, founded by devout Christian S. Truett Cathy, keeps stores closed on Sundays so employees can spend time with their families and go to church.

Small companies with good stories to tell also did well in the rankings. Blake Mycoskie, the founder of Toms Shoes (for ?Tomorrow?s Shoes?), which launched in Venice, Calif., in 2006, donates a pair of shoes to needy people in places like Argentina and Haiti for every pair that it sells. Toms ranks No. 18 on the list.

Goodwill (No. 23) ? a newcomer to the list ? is another ?outlier among so many high-power business brands,? Barber said.??Consumers are really appreciative of the Goodwill retail stores and the perceived feel-good value they are bringing to local communities.?

Another newcomer: Whole Foods. ?I believe one of the greatest stories lies behind Whole Foods,? Barber said. ?The company?s chief executive, John Mackey, appears to be on a passionate campaign around what he calls ?Conscious Capitalism,? an emphasis on grounding business around a profound purpose.?

Though the survey didn?t ask directly about companies? relationships with employees, those with a reputation for treating employees well got high rankings. For example, Google which is known for having one of the best work environments in the country, providing free meals and entertainment and encouraging employees to spend 10 percent of their time on creative projects unrelated to their daily jobs, earned the No. 4 spot this year.

What do consumers do when they are inspired by a company? The survey found that 86 percent of respondents say they would recommend the company to friends and family. Eighty-two percent would be loyal to that company, and another 92 percent would share their experience with others. Almost three-quarters (71 percent) reported they would spend more on a company that inspires them.

?This survey highlights the fact that a company needs to spend some time uncovering and mining its own inspirational DNA and it needs to show up, not just in an ad, but in the interaction between associate and customer,? Barber concluded.

Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook: Please, Will The Regulators Stop Worrying About Monopolies?

One of my favourite economists, Lynne Kiesling, has written on why the regulators and bureaucracies really should worry a great deal less about the possibility of monopolies in the tech space. A basic point is that the whole field is simply changing too quickly. She also links to this well argued piece on the fleeting nature of the monopolies that are being worried about.

No one actually gets a monopoly for long enough to be able to fleece consumers through having that monopoly. This is as true of Facebook as it is of Google, Microsoft or Apple.

I would go further on two points. The first is that given the speed with which these markets move bureaucracy and the law just isn?t the correct method of dealing with the problem even if it does exist. It is almost impossible to imagine any governmental organisation spotting a problem, working out what to do about it and then crafting the solution in a period under two or three years. Do recall that this is about the period of time since the release of the iPad itself. Quite: if the iPad had been noted as a monopolistic product right on the day of first issue we?d be expecting a bureaucracy to be just about ready to do something about it today. Which does suggest that bureaucracy isn?t the way to deal with any problems we might have in this sort of technological space.

The second point is slightly more theoretical. The current government and legal attitude towards monopoly is that if you?ve got great market power then you might indeed be a monopoly and thus you?re subject to special rules. Investigations, constraints on how you can leverage that market power and so on come into play. The argument being that if you?ve this market power you might deploy it to the detriment of the consumer.

There?s a slight problem with this though: economists have gone one stage further in considering monopolies. It?s not a wholly agreed point but there?s a decent level of consensus. Having market power, even having a monopoly, isn?t sufficient to induce firms to act against consumer interests. Having uncontestable market power, an uncontestable monopoly, might well be: but the crucial point is whether they are contestable or not. Possessors of contestable market power or monopoly can be assumed to either not act against consumer interest or to be about to lose said market power or monopoly.

Think of it this way. Assume that one company, just for the sake of argument we?ll call it Apple, had all the patents necessary to stop anyone else making a smartphone of any kind at all. They launch the iPhone and no one is allowed to produce anything even remotely similar: there?s no Android, Windows Phone, Firefox cannot even play with their OS and so on. We would indeed be worried about Apple creaming monopoly profits off the top of that market for the next decade or so that those patents are valid. We might indeed want to curtail what they can do.

Now consider our actual world: yes, there are still patent fights. But they are about minor details of the implementation of how you build and operate a smartphone (well, OK, rectangles with rounded corners aside) not about the very concept of one at all. There are a number of operating systems for smartphones, there is a larger number of manufacturers of them. We do see Apple with great market power (which is why they?re making the vast majority of the profits in the sector) but it is obviously true that Apple?s position is contestable. Given this contestability Apple cannot simply rest on its laurels and bleed the consumers dry. It must continue to develop the iPhone, improve the consumer experience or it will lose that predominant position. If they stumble for a year or two Microsoft and Nokia, or maybe Google and Samsung, or some as yet unknown competitor, will come and eat their lunch.

So we don?t really need to worry about Apple?s market position because the contestability of it, the precariousness of it, means that they cannot act like a monopoly and hope to hold on to that position. And it is not market power, nor even monopoly, that we are actually worried about but the misuse of it.

The same logic applies to Microsoft and browsers. To Facebook and social networking. Amazon and e-books and yes, even to Google and search engine placement. Anyone who tries to abuse a dominant market position is very quickly going to lose that position. Simply because all of these monopolies are contestable. There are enough other firms vying for the space (and it?s never been easier to raise the VC money to attack such spaces if you want to create a new rival) that even those who have achieved market dominance cannot exploit it. And given that it?s the exploitation, not the market dominance, which is the potential problem there isn?t in fact much of a problem.

There are economists who would say that a true monopoly without government action to support it is impossible. I wouldn?t go as far as that hardline position. I think there can indeed be monopolies for other reasons like network effects, to say nothing of patent rules. But I do think that some of the current worries about monopolies in the tech space are overdone. Purely and simply because they?re contestable monopolies and thus not really exploitable in the sense that we worry about when considering the very idea of monopoly.

'Angry Birds' spinoff 'Bad Piggies' is the whole hog

You really can't go wrong spending the pocket change or the time it'll cost you to buy and play the newest game from the creators of "Angry Birds." When it comes to puzzle gaming for your mobile device,?"Bad Piggies"?really is the whole hog.

The "Angry Birds" spinoff from Finnish game company Rovio (which launched in Apple's App store Thursday)?has everything you'd want from a great mobile game???the bright art,?oddly lovable characters, ear-worm music and, most importantly, the highly-polished, infectious and thought-provoking puzzle gameplay you can jump into and out of at (almost) a?moment's notice.?

But let's get something straight: Though this game is clearly?a sister/spin-off/sequel to the?phenomenally?successful Angry Birds games,??there is nary a slingshot or irate?avian?to be found in "Bad Piggies." As the name implies, this game is all about the birds' egg-thieving?nemesis. And, more importantly, "Bag Piggies" has a gameplay?mechanic all its own.

In this game, those endlessly hungry porkers are trying to reach the birds' eggs,?but the map that leads to their delicious location has been torn to shreds. And so, it is your job to help your porcine buddies collect the pieces of the map, which are spread across more than 60?different levels.

But since the pigs are, well, nothing but snouty, leggless?orbs and thus entirely unable to move on their own, you're tasked with constructing contraptions to carry them from starting point A, across, over and around various landscapes and obstacles, to end?point B, where the map piece is.?

Plenty of other contraption-building games have come before, but with "Bad Piggies" Rovio has distilled this kind of physics?puzzle?gameplay down to its sleek, accessible and addictive?essence.

The first two worlds???"Ground Hog Day" and "When Pigs Fly"???are each made up of 45 levels full of landscapes that must be rolled across or flown through. ?At the start of each level, you'll be given various items with which to make your pig-carrying jallopy???boxes, wheels,?balloons, fans, explosive soda pop bottles, umbrellas,?engines, propellers, rockets,?etc.

Once you've put your contraption together, you set it in motion and see how far you get.?But even when your pig is on the move, your work is not yet done. For example, if?you've attached a fan and a couple of soda pop bottles to the box with your pig in it, you'll have to smartly set the fan blowing or set the pop bottles exploding at just the right time to get your porcine?friend where he needs to go.

And often, he will not get where he needs to go.?This is a game in which, if at first you don't succeed,? you must find joy in try, trying again. You are certain to send your pig careening into walls and plummeting to the ground whereupon your contraption will bust to pieces. But that's OK. The fun?here comes in not only?learning from your mistakes but watching your mistakes happen.

As with "Angry Birds" (and plenty of other puzzle games), you'll be challenged to earn?three stars in each of the levels in?the first two?worlds. But this time around, Rovio lets you know exactly what you need to do to get those?three stars. And these goals vary from level to level.?

You can earn a?star by, well, running into a?star placed in a hard-to-reach locale, or by?getting your pig??from the starting point to the map in a certain amount of time, or by making it through the level without damaging your?contraption?at all. Sometimes you earn?a star by creating a contraption that gets you from point A to point B without using a specific part that would make that journey easier. And sometimes you'll be rewarded with a star?for getting the?Pig King through the course too.

But the star collecting ramps up to entirely new and epic proportions?once you unlock the Sandbox levels in the game. These sprawling levels toss 20 stars across vast landscapes and then give you a large?supply of parts with which to build your contraption. The goal here is to see how many stars you can get to. And snagging?more than a few stars is no easy task.?But it is an absolute blast to create and then?tinker with?the most madcap pig-rig you can think up as you try to inch your way to each star.

Of course, the question that will always follow Rovio is: Will this game be as wildly successful as "Angry Birds?" We can't help but wonder: Have they, once again, captured that mysterious something that will earn "Bad Piggies" the?billion downloads their feathered friends have?earned?

If I was a betting person, I'd say no. Not because "Bad Piggies" is a bad game in any way, but because?"Bad Piggies" will require more of you???and your brain???than the?Angry Birds games?do. While you can?kind of mindlessly send your birds slingshotting through the air in "Angry Birds," you can't just mindlessly send your piggy rolling down a hill ... at least not if you want to be remotely successful.

You need to think about what you're building, you need to refine your work and you'll need to stay focused as your pig is in motion. It will certainly take you more time to get into the groove of this game???and that could be offputting to some casual players. But ultimately this?is?a good thing.?"Bad Piggies" is,?in many ways,?more challenging than its angry brethren?and, I think, because of that it is?more rewarding. It really is an absolute joy to see your pig fly ... and reach his destination in one piece.

Each of these ads ran recently in states with gay marriage issues on the November ballot. What's missing? Gay people speaking for themselves.

Four states are voting on gay marriage this fall, and gay rights groups are pouring tens of millions of dollars into key TV markets in hopes of breaking a 32-state losing streak on the issue. But even as gay people and same-sex relationships gain acceptance through pop culture staples such as "Modern Family" and "Glee," the idea is still seen as dicey by media strategists involved in the ballot campaigns, resulting in ads that usually involve only straight people talking about the issue.

The decision to keep gays in the background has been widely noticed in the gay community and debated on gay-oriented blogs, with some activists complaining that the move contradicts the central message of the gay rights movement for a number of years.

"If we don't show ourselves, people aren't going to get comfortable with who we are," said Wayne Besen, director of Vermont-based gay rights group "Truth Wins Out," one of many that presses gays to live openly with pride in who they are.

But others counsel deference for the complexities of public messaging, pointing out that the ads are designed to speak to the fears and values of the heterosexual majority, whose vote will decide the issue.

"The moderate tough guys we need to flip to win a couple of these races are still the ones who say that gays are gross," said Andy Szekeres, a Denver-based fundraising consultant who has worked on several state campaigns and had access to focus group data. "Pushing people to an uncomfortable place, it's something you can't do in a TV ad," said Szekeres, who is gay.

The definition of marriage is on the ballot this fall in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Beyond those, according to the Human Rights Campaign, 37 states prohibit gay marriage while six and the District of Columbia permit it. Gay activists and their allies are hoping that any wins in November would throw new momentum their way at a time when polls nationwide have shown growing acceptance for gay marriage.

Six of the seven ads broadcast in the contested states this year have featured only straight people talking about the issue. One ad, which played only in Maine, included a firefighter who talked of being accepted by his colleagues. The ads, along with most that ran in the 2008 campaign in California and in other past statewide races, rely on heterosexual family members and friends of gays talking about how the inability to marry has deprived their loved ones of rights and opportunities they should have.

Gay marriage opponents, who also have well-funded campaigns in the four states, plan to begin airing ads soon. In recent interviews, an organizer said the key message is aimed at parents, suggesting legal recognition could result in their kids being told in school and in society that it's OK to be gay.

Manchester Community Music School serves over 1,200 students from fifty-four New Hampshire communities each year through music lessons and ensembles for all ages. Students can participate in four orchestras, a jazz ensemble, wind ensemble, concert band, community band, after-school programs and summer music camps. Chicago (September 27, 2012)New comprehensive guidelines for the pre- operative care of the nation's elderly patients have been issued by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Geriatrics Society (AGS). The joint guidelinespublished in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeonsapply to every patient who is 65 years and older as defined by Medicare regulations. The guidelines are the culmination of two years of research and analysis by a multidisciplinary expert panel representing the ACS and AGS, as well as by expert representatives from a range of medical specialties.

"The major objective of these guidelines is to help surgeons and the entire perioperative care team improve the quality of surgical care for elderly patients," said Clifford Y. Ko, MD, FACS, Director of the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) and the ACS Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care in Chicago, professor of surgery at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and director of UCLA's Center for Surgical Outcomes and Quality.

One of the driving forces behind the guidelines is America's expanding geriatric popu- lation, Dr. Ko explained. The U.S. Census Bureau projects the percentage of men and women 65 years and older will more than double between 2010 and 2050 and will increase by 20 per-cent of the total population by 2030.* In 2006, elderly patients underwent 35 percent of inpatient surgical procedures and 32 percent of outpatient procedures according to study authors.

"For elderly patients undergoing surgical procedures, we want to ensure we are optimiz-ing each patient's medical condition," Dr. Ko said. "This population is growing in numbers and we want to emphasize the depth and breadth of care required for them. These evidence-based guidelines will enhance surgical practice by setting higher standards and performance measures for surgeons and the entire perioperative care team," he said. This is the first time ACS has worked with AGS to develop guidelines for geriatric patients according to Dr. Ko.

The guidelines recommend and specify 13 key issues of preoperative care for the elderly: cognitive impairment and dementia; decision-making capacity; postoperative delirium; alcohol and substance abuse; cardiac evaluation; pulmonary evaluation; functional status, mobility, and fall risk; frailty; nutritional status; medication management; patient counseling; preoperative testing; and patient-family and social support system.

"There is no single magic bullet for rendering this level of surgical care," Dr. Ko said. "Each of the 13 issues covered by the guidelines is very important, comprehensive, and difficult to prioritize. For example, surgeons and perioperative team members may do perfectly well when analyzing a patient's cognitive functioning , but not so well on the polypharmacy issue. So then suddenly, polypharmacy becomes the number-one issue for the surgical team to address during the preoperative care phase," he explained.

Furthermore, the expert panel said there are complex problems specific to the elderly, including use of multiple medications, functional status, frailty, risk of malnutrition, cognitive impairment, and comorbidities. "When surgeons evaluate elderly patients before they undergo operations, they want to know how many and what specific medications their patients are taking. This step will enable them to identify potential medication issues before operations and before the surgeons start adding pain medication to the patient's medication list," Dr. Ko explained.

As the guidelines state: "consider minimizing the patient's risk for adverse drug reac-tions by identifying what should be discontinued before surgery or should be avoided and dose reducing or substituting potentially inappropriate medications."

Additionally, the number and severity of underlying medical problems call for special strategies by the entire surgical team, according to Dr. Ko.

"Patients who are 90 years old tend to have more comorbidities than those who are 65 years," he said. "There may be something wrong with the heart, the lungs, the kidneys, the liver. Surgeons have to plan and deal with these comorbidities simultaneously while the patient is undergoing a surgical procedure."

The guidelines state that evaluating patients for developing heart disease and heart attack is critical to identify patients at higher risk. All patients should be evaluated for perioperative cardiac risk.

"Caring for the elderly generally requires a team approach," said Dr. Ko. "The surgeon knows how to perform surgery and the cardiologist knows how to take care of the heart. It's best for everyone to work together to take care of the patient. We want everyone on the same page of providing good quality care."

These guidelines have been developed in response to a performance measure that the ACS has developed with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), according to Dr. Ko. The performance measure evaluates the quality of care in patients eligible for Medicare.

ACS NSQIP has worked with CMS to develop "The Elderly Surgery Measure." This is a hospital-based measure that assesses the outcome of elderly patients undergoing surgical procedures. The ACS and CMS will launch a pilot program in October that gives hospitals the opportunity to publicly and voluntarily report the outcome results.

A short, sharp article today about something that just happened in the Internet Marketing world that shook me to the core!

Every week it feels like there is a brand new product launch... all pushed by affiliates and all claiming that you can make a fast/quick buck online. Now, these types of product don't really appeal to us, however one launch did catch my eye... not because of the product but the way the sales letter positioned it.

The sales letter took a stance that I have not seen in the Internet Marketing arena before although I have seen similar ones, but less hard hitting (!), in the life insurance arena.

In a nut shell the letter told a story of a lady who on the surface appeared to have the perfect life, great husband, lovely children and everything was going right for them.

In fact it was so good they decided to move house to a bigger, better one.

And that's when it started to fall apart.

The sales letter told of how her perfect husband had been having an affair and how he moved out and left her with the children. Sad, but she still had the house and children etc.

But here's the kicker?the sales letter then said that her husband was killed in an accident and he didn't have any life insurance?she was left with a mountain of bills and growing debt.

Suddenly she had gone from a 'picture book' life to a one of serious debt, unhappiness and despairing how she was going to manage bringing her children up in this new strange world she had been thrown into.

TIME OUT

How would you feel reading a letter like that?

Think about it?it had drawn you in with a story about a family that seemingly had it all? and then bang! It hit you with a killer blow.

Carrying on with the sales letter, it detailed how she needed money fast and, of course, started an online business that generated her cash quickly and turned her's and her children's lives around and you could do the same thing.

I don't know how you would react, but my first reaction was to think, hmm, that's stooping a bit low.

The Letter Had Actually Altered My State Of Mind

I wasn't enraged as some people have been (remember: forums do tell all) but it didn't leave me feeling good, in fact I had to take a reality check to get my mind back on track and forcibly remove the negative thoughts that had swamped my head.

Let me tell you this: Any sales letter that changes the state of a reader's mind is doing its job? perfectly! That why we write them. To get someone who has shown an interest in our product or service to engage with us and ultimately do what we ask them to do? sign-up or buy.

This letter did just that? but in a way that left me personally cold and feeling negative? not good!

Did It Work?

Now, I do believe that if this letter was read by anyone who needed money quickly or was desperate to start an online business it would have succeeded in getting the sale.

However, even after taking a step back and looking at the sales letter objectively I just couldn't bring myself to accept that I would ever use such a tactic so sell a product outside of the life assurance/funeral markets!

Was the launch of the product successful? I don't know, however it was being pushed by the usual suspects in that field and I'm sure it did very well.

Will it generate sales... most definitely!

A recent study in The Journal of General Physiology characterizes the movement of rhodopsin, a GPCR and member of a large family of transmembrane receptors responsible for many cellular responses and involved in many human diseases.

In living Xenopus rod photoreceptor cells, rhodopsin is found in stacks of disc membranes that are difficult to study due to their small size. Now, Peter Calvert (SUNY Upstate Medical University) and colleagues have developed an approach with two-photon microscopy that, for the first time, allows direct examination within the living cell of how the geometry of the micro-compartment will affect its signaling.

The team focused on the effect of micro-compartments formed by "incisures", radial membrane boundaries that segment the discs into smaller regions. These micro-compartments, defined by the rim and incisures, have a surface area similar to that of a human or mouse rod photoreceptor disc, so that the total number of components in the GPCR signaling cascade are conserved, and the downstream effects of a captured photon of light are similar. Calvert and colleagues used a novel high-resolution approach to monitor fluorescently labeled rhodopsin as it diffused in the disc membrane. The team developed a model of molecular diffusion to interpret the results that explicitly took the measured micro-compartments into account, and found that the boundary geometry, not heterogeneity in diffusion or a "bound fraction," was sufficient to explain differences in the extent of diffusion or rhodopsin in different regions of the disc.
