Inside Breezy Point: An inferno in a flood

Reporter's Notebook:? ABC News' Keturah Gray and Jim Dubreuil

When we were sent out on Monday afternoon to report on the "holdouts" of Hurricane Sandy - those who refused to leave their homes despite New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's mandatory evacuation orders - we expected winds and rain, but thought it was nothing that we couldn't handle.

We had our bottled water, our rain gear, our chips and were ready to tough out the storm with the citizens of Breezy Point, a beach town in Queens on the far end of New York City, and a place where Jim has family.

We were two of the last to arrive over the Marine Parkway Bridge before it closed to the public at 2 p.m. ET, and we joined up pretty quickly with 30-year-old Mary Lepera. She gave us a tour of the neighborhood and explained why she, like so many others, planned to stick out Hurricane Sandy at home: She'd spent her whole life there and wasn't about to abandon her home.

"We're sticking it out," she said. "Even if we have to go up on our roof, we'll do it."

A lot of people kind of felt that they had jumped through hoops for Irene, and this time, they weren't going to do it. And there was just this feeling that the storm was going to be like any other storm that hits the East Coast. It wasn't going to be the Super Storm that had been portrayed - but that's not what happened.

Over the course of the next few hours, though, Breezy Point became a literal lightning rod in the storm, battered by winds, rain and fire. At least 80 homes were destroyed in the beachfront neighborhood and we got caught in the chaos.

The last thing anyone imagines is a fire breaking out. But that's exactly what happened.

Jim DuBreuil: I remember looking out the window around 8:30 at night, and all of a sudden, we just saw this ? it seemed like we were in a national forest where you see all those fires with timbers flying around. It was off in the distance and at 8:20 at night, I wasn't thinking this is going to affect us. But as each hour progressed, the storm, the fire was just coming closer and closer and God, you [Keturah Gray] looked at me and said, "We're getting the hell out of here," and I was like, "Yeah, let's go." I got a trash can and we threw in garbage bags and all of our camera equipment in it. The family we were with did the same and we were out the door.

Keturah Gray: I just remember when I first saw that fire thinking we have water on one side of the house, we have a TON of water on the back side of the house, and we have a fire that is inevitably going to get closer because of all of the winds. I was just like, "What do we do? Where do we even begin? Do we take this route or this route?" I was so worried about the people that I knew, because we had been down that beach earlier that afternoon. There were a lot of people in that line of fire, and I just didn't know how they were going to get out.

Jim DuBreuil: I kind of think where we got lucky was the tide started going down. The water was much higher at 8 o'clock and then by 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock it was just easier to get around. Where the water would've been up to our chins, the water was finally at our waist. We put on our backpacks and got our trashcan and headed out of there.

Keturah Gray: I think I was the first one that was like, we need an escape plan, but I also didn't know if I was going to be strong enough to walk through the water.

Jim DuBreuil: Timbers are flying and there's 80 mph winds coming at you as you're going through the waves. You're trying to get through the flood and the fire's behind you and I just remember looking at you and going "don't look back, don't look back."

Keturah Gray: The water was receding, but the fire was becoming stronger. We were walking against the current, which was really hard, and we're carrying a trash can and a lot of other people had babies they were carrying and bags.

Jim DuBreuil: I think it could've been absolutely chaotic and hell on earth at one point, but everyone got together. People were helping each other and going "OK, we're going to get you out." We were moving from one spot to the next. When we got to our first evacuation spot, which was maybe 100 meters away from the first house we were at, I could smell kerosene. They told us there's a gas pump nearby. At that point, the fire has moved and the embers are now coming in to the fire and Keturah looked at me again and was like, "Let's get the out of here." It just seemed the fire was following us. We finally got to a Roman Catholic Church and, for me, that was the moment when I was like, "We're going to be all right. These people are going to be all right and we're going to get out of here."

Keturah Gray: That's when they said nobody can stay. You are leaving this time. And everybody that we were with, for the most part, were happy to hear those words.

Jim DuBreuil: I think it's easy to look at people like this and say, "Gosh, why didn't they heed the warning," but I think these people just love their community so much and they take care of each other, that they just didn't want to leave and they didn't think it was going to be bad and I think they realized that they made a mistake. But again, they could've never predicted a huge fire. The people of Breezy Point will come back and rebuild.

Tumblr back up, after prolonged outage

7 hrs.

Be careful about approaching your friends and colleagues right now. They might be a bit irritable as they were unable to get a dose of GIFs and Ryan Gosling memes on Tumblr for the better part of Friday morning.?

Yes, the popular blogging service was down for several hours.

According to a note on?the official Tumblr Twitter account?? yes, Tumblr is indeed?on Twitter?? there were "slow loading or intermittent errors on certain pages." The service's staff quickly got to work on setting everything right, according to the same tweet, of course.

Despite the assertion that only some pages were?showing errors or loading slowly, we've found that every single Tumblr blog we've tried to access was affected. Based on the panic which flooded?Twitter, many others were experiencing equally severe issues.

A Tumblr spokesperson offered us the following statement when asked about what's went?on with the service:

Tumblr is experiencing network problems following an issue with one of?our uplink providers. Recovery is moving quickly and we will return to?full service shortly.

Service to appears to have been restored shortly after 2 p.m. ET. Tumblr addicts around the world likely?breathed?a collective sigh of relief.

Want more?tech news or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

In her lead paper presentation, former World Bank Vice-President, Oby Ezekwesili, listed six core areas of development that can enhance the educational system in the country. They are early childhood education, basic education, secondary education, tertiary education, special education, as well as informal or adult education.

Absentee ballots may have been destroyed in crash

(AP) ? Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

Federal officials in their email to state election offices said they did not know if any ballots were destroyed. They also said the lost mail was limited to one zip code.

But they recommended that election officials resend a new ballot to anyone who requested one since the first ballot may have been destroyed in the crash and fire.

Insurance Institute Awards Highest Rating to a Record Number of ...

Of 17 new-for-2012 booster seats identified by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 15 received the organization?s top rating of Best Bet. Accounting for previously evaluated models on the market, the latest evaluation brings the total of Best Bet boosters to 47.

That represents the highest number of top-rated boosters since 2008, when the I.I.H.S., which is financed by the insurance industry, began evaluating the seats. In 2008 only 10 were rated Best Bets.

Booster seats are intended to fill the gap between the time a child is too big for a safety seat, with its internal harnesses, and too small for a vehicle?s seat belts to fit correctly.

In another first, the number of booster seats on the market that are rated Best Bets outpaces the tally in any other individual category; five seats are rated a Good Bet, 37 are in the Check Fit category and two fall in the Not Recommended group.

A Best Bet indicates that a booster would correctly position belts on a typical 4- to 8-year-old in almost any car, minivan or sport utility vehicle. A Good Bet provides an acceptable fit in most vehicles. Check Fit indicates it may work well in some vehicles, but not as many as one rated a Best Bet or Good Bet.

Models are classified Not Recommended when they do not provide the proper seat belt fit. Just two fell in the category in 2012, a welcome decrease from 2008, when 13 models received the classification, the study?s authors noted.

The two Not Recommended products, the Safety 1st All-in-One and Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite, both manufactured by Dorel Juvenile Group, have been on the Not Recommended list since 2009, when they were first evaluated.

Five seats manufactured by Dorel are Best Bets, while one is a Good Bet and 12 are rated as Check Fit.

Four other booster seats that were on the Not Recommended list last year, all made by Evenflo Company, have been discontinued.

The institute emphasized, as is its tendency every year, that parents would not have to spend a fortune for a booster seat to fit their child in a Best Best model, though they certainly could. Best Bets in 2012 range from $19 to $300, with several models selling at the lower end.

Evaluations performed by the I.I.H.S. focus on correct seat belt fit. The boosters themselves are not crash-tested because safety belts are expected to provide the protection needed by a child in a crash, the institute says.

Brent below $108 ahead of US GDP data, set to fall for 2nd week

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent futures fell more than $1 to slip below $108 a barrel on Friday as investors waited for key U.S. economic data to gauge the demand growth outlook for oil with rising supplies weighing on prices.

The world's biggest economy likely grew at a 1.9 percent annual rate in the third quarter, according to a Reuters poll, but still well short of the pace economists say is needed to ensure steady recovery. Brent has fallen more than 3 percent this month in part on investor reluctance to lock in fresh positions ahead of U.S. elections.

Brent crude had slipped $1.02 a barrel to $107.47 by 0527 GMT. The contract ended higher on Thursday, after seven straight sessions of declines that marked its longest losing streak since July 2010. U.S. oil slipped 90 cents to $85.15, after ending up 32 cents.

"It is difficult to lock in fresh positions," said Tetsu Emori, a Tokyo-based commodities fund manager at Astmax Investment. "Investors are awaiting election results and more data that supports a steady global economic recovery."

Since climbing out of the 2007-09 recession, the U.S. economy has faced a series of headwinds from high gasoline prices to the debt turmoil in Europe and, lately, fears of U.S. government austerity. It has struggled to exceed a 2 percent growth pace and remains about 4.5 million jobs short of where it stood when the downturn started.

"There is an element of investors staying on the sidelines ahead of key data in the way prices are moving today," said Ben Le Brun, a market analyst at OptionsXpress.

"U.S. GDP will certainly have an impact across risk assets, including oil, and a surprise to the downside would be very bearish for oil."

The European benchmark is set to fall 2.5 percent this week following a near 4 percent decline the week before. U.S. oil is on track to slide 5.5 percent, the lowest since September 23.

Oil prices have also been dragged lower by rising U.S. inventories, poor corporate earnings and Europe's worsening financial crisis,

Rising supplies from Iraq and Libya have helped offset declines in Iranian exports, which have slumped due to tight Western sanctions.

GOING SPARE

The world's spare oil production capacity outside of Iran rose in the last two months to 2 million barrels per day, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said, up from 1.8 million bpd in the previous two months, said the report, which is required by last year's Iran sanctions law.

"Commodity prices continue to be stifled by global demand concerns with U.S. corporate earnings season not exactly painting a picture of economic health for the coming year," Tim Waterer, sales trader at CMC Markets, said in a report.

Hurricane Sandy swelled into a major threat to much of the U.S. East Coast on Thursday after lashing Cuba with heavy rains and tree-toppling winds and swirling through the Bahamas, U.S. forecasters said.

They warned of flooding, heavy rains and high winds beginning late Thursday in Florida. Sandy may force refineries in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to slow or shut some operations, hurting gasoline and heating oil in the east coast.

Additional support for prices also came from Labor Department data showing initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 23,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 369,000.

The four-week moving average for jobless claims rose 1,500 to 368,000. Economists generally think a reading below 400,000 points to an increase in employment, with hiring likely outpacing layoffs.

What Celebrities Talk About When They Talk About Food - NYTimes ...

For this week?s Food & Drink Issue,? you can read about the utterly obsessive food habits of Gayle King, Al Michaels, Bruce Ratner and Wendy Williams. Here you can discover celebrities? quirky, wholesome or unusually contemplative?food preferences.

THE ODDBALLS

Daniel Libeskind, architect: ?In the morning, I have cereal or toast with jam. Or some blueberries. I never eat any lunch. I know it may not be the healthiest way to be. It?s usually late when we finish work at the studio ? 9 o?clock, 10 o?clock ? and my wife still cooks a three-course meal. It?s kind of a strange pattern, but we often eat very, very late.?

Stevie Johnson, N.F.L. player, Buffalo Bills: ?I say I?m like a fat skinny kid, man. I?m like the fattest skinny person. If I?m getting a chicken breast, I get two. I?m always going back for seconds. I clear off my plate. You don?t have to eat everything that?s on your plate, but I end up doing it anyway. I gotta practice and run around, so I don?t just sit around with all this food in my stomach. I get big servings.?

T.I., rapper and author, ?Trouble & Triumph: A Novel of Power and Beauty?: ?I have a taste for Benihana?s Japanese fried rice over the hibachi. I once ate that about four or five days a week for about three weeks. It tastes real. A lot of garlic, butter and sauces. Get some shrimp and stuff in there, man ? awesome!?

THE HEALTH NUTS

Alice Cooper, rock star: ?After a show, there?s always pizza, and unfortunately it?s the easiest thing to get when you?re in Wichita at midnight. So we have catering, but I find that now, when I?m going to get on a bus or plane and drive or fly to the next place, I have Lean Cuisine. I?ll just have something really light. If you eat four or five pieces of pizza before you go to sleep, you?re going to start gaining weight. After a while, you just say: ?Really? Pizza? Again?? ?

Sirio Maccioni, restaurateur and author, ?A Table at Le Cirque?: ?The doctors now tell me to eat fish, fish, fish, so I eat fish soup. We have very good fish. Flounder is one of our specials. And sole. At Le Cirque, even during the summer, we always have steak, but the doctor only lets met eat steak once a week. I try to find a way to lose weight. I believe that it?s wrong to get old. What can I tell you? I really try to follow a diet. I hate to get old, and I hate everything that goes with that. For the moment, I?m doing really well, but unfortunately, I?m 80 years old, and I know how to count.?

Padma Lakshmi, Top Chef host and cookbook author: ?I don?t believe in cleanses, and I don?t believe in deprivation. I believe in eating the flavors you love in a more healthy way. If you really love chipotle-smoked beef, that?s fantastic. I just would advise a girlfriend to have a chipotle-rubbed fish. I know how to eat healthy. Sometimes I want to eat a big, fat plate of carbonara, and as long as I go boxing, I do.?

Jeffrey Sachs, director of Columbia University?s Earth Institute: ?My life has been divided in two. I was a pretty heavy hamburger eater until sometime around age 40, and then I decided it probably wasn?t the greatest approach for health. I?m not a purist on this ? this is a personal taste ? but nudging the world away from too much red-meat consumption, especially with the way it?s grown in feedlots, there?s a very heavy environmental impact. It combines with a health impact, and we really ought to take note of it.?

THE PHILOSOPHERS

Deepak Chopra, author, ?God: A Story of Revelation?: ?In general, I want to have seven colors of the rainbow. The seven colors of the rainbow are very important because they reflect phytochemicals, which are the most intelligent micronutrients that we know the pharmaceutical benefits of. Phytochemicals are actually chemicals derived from the energy of sun. They?re anti-inflammatory; they?re anti-carcinogenic. I?ve been a lifelong student of how nutrition affects our body physiologically, but also pharmacologically and even psychologically, because moods are influenced by food. That?s why we use taste metaphors: sweet love, sour grapes, bitter experience, pungent remarks, astringent humor and salt of the earth, etc. I think even the consciousness of the chef, the consciousness of the people you?re with and the attitude to food influences everything about food.?

Junot D?az, author, ?This Is How You Lose Her?: ?I would call eating the most human rhythm of learning how to take and accept generosity. That?s really what someone?s doing when they?re cooking for you: They?re extending generosity. Then there?s the other difficult lesson of being human: Learning how to share. Neither of these things is encouraged in our culture. I mean, c?mon, we?re rabid capitalists. I think we often forget that getting together and breaking bread isn?t just the delight in food. There?s a lot of importance: about hospitality, about respect and about, I think, the social values that play themselves out in the drama we call eating.?

Tony Bennett, singer, philanthropist and author, ?Life Is a Gift?: ?There was only one great president, as far as I?m concerned, and his name was Abraham Lincoln. Just before he was assassinated, he came up with a plan: He wanted to feed the world. He didn?t want to give them weapons; he just wanted to feed everybody. He said, ?If we feed everybody, then we?ll eliminate poverty and there won?t be any wars.? That?s my great dream: that somehow or other our great country will do the same thing, just feed everybody in the world. It?ll slow down all the wars.?

Make Sure Kids are Secure During Teen Driver Safety Week - Lower ...

Governor Tom Corbett today proclaimed Oct. 14-20 as Teen Driver Safety Week, noting two significant pieces of legislation that he signed into law in the past year aimed at increasing safety for teens.

Corbett?s proclamation coincides with the safety week?s national observance.

In the past year, Corbett signed Act 81, which enhanced teen driver safety by strengthening the graduated driver licensing law, and Act 84, which requires safety training for 16- and 17-year-olds seeking motorcycle licenses.

?Over the past year we?ve made great strides in ensuring our youngest drivers have as much experience as possible on our roadways,? PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. ?PennDOT is wholeheartedly invested in traffic safety, and the bills the governor has signed emphasize the state?s commitment to future generations of safe drivers.?

When Corbett signed Act 81, which became effective in December 2011, the state?s graduated driver licensing requirements were updated to include:

  • Increased supervised, behind-the-wheel skill building for permit holders under 18 years old from 50 hours to 65 hours;
  • Stricter limits on the number of passengers young drivers can transport for the first six months after receiving their junior license; and
  • Making it a primary offense for violating the law?s provision requiring the proper use of seat belts for drivers and front-seat passengers of passenger cars, class I and II trucks or motor homes, who are under the age of 18, and every occupant older than eight but younger than 18.

In August, Corbett signed Act 84, which requires 16- and 17-year olds who want to obtain a motorcycle license to first complete the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program?s Basic Rider Course (BRC). The 15 hours of training they receive through the BRC counts toward the 65 hours of on-the-road training riders under the age of 18 must complete to obtain a motorcycle license.?

From 2007 to 2011, there were 109,313 crashes involving at least one 16- to 19-year old driver in Pennsylvania, resulting in 942 fatalities. Nearly 53 percent of those crashes involved the teen driver driving too fast for conditions (28,148 crashes), driver inexperience (11,071), driver distraction (10,028) and improper/careless turning (8,614).

The risk of a crash involving any of these factors can be reduced through practice, limiting the number of passengers riding with a teen driver, parents setting a good example for the teen driver, obeying all rules of the road and exercising common sense.?

As a part of their obligation to help teen drivers become more responsible, safer drivers, parents should:

  • Talk to your teen about safe driving skills before they turn 16.
  • Establish a parent/teen driving contract.
  • Limit the number of passengers your teen is allowed to have in their vehicle.
  • Limit dawn, dusk and nighttime driving until your teen gathers more experience, and enforce a curfew. Remember, Pennsylvania law prohibits 16- and 17-year-old drivers with a junior driver?s license from driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Gradually increase the amount of time/distance your teen is allowed to drive.
  • Encourage your teen to avoid distractions behind the wheel, such as talking or texting on the cell phone.
  • Enforce observance of speed limits and other rules of the road.
  • Ride with your teen occasionally to monitor driving skills.
  • Set a good example.

?Our inaugural Creative Writing Workshop for Teenage Writers, which was??designed and led?by Dave Lordan, was one of the great successes of this year?s West Cork Literary Festival. It sold out very quickly, and participants travelled from all around the country to take part. Parents expressed their appreciation that a workshop aimed specifically at creative teenagers was available. In this course, Dave concentrated on the participants? creativity, without limiting it to writing, which allowed them to develop a very broad spectrum of artistic skills. One young man, for example, was invited by renowned author Dava Sobel to perform a section of her play during her own headline event. A young woman, who had insisted on the first day that she would?never?do a public reading, nonetheless read her extraordinary piece about the Christchurch earthquake on the following Friday. Several of the group, with Dave?s guidance, volunteered to take part in our Amnesty International Writers at Risk campaign, which involved reading to huge audiences, in front of world-class authors. Dave?s work on this involved helping the group to write and edit their pieces, coaching them in public speaking, and giving moral support at the event.? Having young people involved, like this, in many aspects of our programme was an asset to the festival ? and would not have been possible without Dave. His dedication to his group was extraordinary. He made himself available to them around the clock, which in fact made it possible for the WCLF to hold this workshop in the first place. The group produced brilliant work in the classroom sessions and their performances at a special reading on the final day were also a testament to Dave?s hard work. Several parents spoke to me in moving terms about what this very special week in Bantry had meant to their children, and so to them, and this is entirely due to Dave?s talent, dedication, and sensitivity. I very much enjoyed working with him, and look forward to repeating the workshop again next year ? with Dave at the helm.??

Beats By Dre launches Executive noise-cancelling headphones, keeps 'em dapper in aluminum for $300 (ears-on)

Beats By Dre launches Executive noise cancelling headphones, we go ears-on

Aside from announcing its entrance into the portable Bluetooth speaker category today, Beats Electronics has also launched its first new set of headphones post-Monster. Aiming to cater to the jet-setting business crowd, the company is classing things up with its (finally released) $300 Executive noise-cancelling over-ears. The design of the headphones seems to be a blend of the Mixr and classic Studios, wrapped in brushed aluminum that's complimented by dark gray leather pads and the requisite "b" on each earcup. Requiring two AAA batteries for power, these active cans (read: they don't work passively) are rated to last up to a healthy 25 hours. The Active noise-cancellation functionality is aided along by two microphones inside the headphones that automatically adjust the effect depending on your surroundings. That said, we'd be remiss not to note that ANC is always enabled, as it's tethered to the power -- you know, to help avoid making your head ring from the likes of jet engines and subway cars. A detachable 3.5mm cable is included, featuring a 3-button in-line remote and mic and a right angle jack on its end. While we're fans of 90-degree jacks, we found that this one couldn't plug into our cased iPhone 5 fully, rendering the remote useless. Lastly, you'll notice from the photo above that the earcups on this pair thankfully fold flat, allowing for easier storage that its Solo and Studio siblings in a briefcase and the like.

We only had a paltry few minutes to try out the cans, but we came away with good vibes about them. To get this out of the way, the voicing from its drivers is totally colored and seems to have that typical Beats S-curve with boosted sub-bass and treble -- a stark contrast from what you'd get with a passive set like the V-Moda M-100 cans. Compared to a similar active pair like like the Klipsch Mode M40, the sound is much more aggressive and lively. Although we listened in a quiet hotel room, the ANC circuitry did seem to dampen a significant chuck of the ambient noise around us -- however, it did have a very noticeable hiss (more apparent than similar cans) from it that we'd likely become annoyed by without music. The earpads are very supple and moderately deep, and the inside of each earcup has some padding over the driver which should help you to evade the dreaded cartilage cramps. The headphones feel extremely sturdy and miles more robust the plasticky Studios, all while still retaining a light feel free of excessive clamping force on this editors head -- very similar, actually, to what we enjoyed with the Parrot Zik cans. All in all, while these aren't the first aluminum clad cans from the company, the Executive headphones really seem like they could stand to be a much better option than the Studios for overall value. Of course, we'll let you know either way when we come to our conclusion. For now, the Executive headphones are on sale today from the Beats Electronics and various retailers if you'd like to try 'em out for yourself.

London City book fair looks to cash in on crisis literature

LONDON (Reuters) - As the global economy lurches from one crisis to another, one industry is benefiting from the uncertainty. Books that try to make sense of it all are selling well - and will get their own bookfair in London next month.

The City Book Fair, aimed at flogging high-brow works to financial professionals in London's financial "City" district, is the first of its kind, the organizers say, and reflects the burgeoning market for crisis critique.

"Particularly now after we've gone through the credit crunch, the banking crisis and now we've got the euro crisis, there are so many books coming out at the moment," said event director Matthew Clements to Reuters.

"There's so much to talk about in that regard that it wasn't just a matter of authors plugging their own books, it was a matter of there's actually a lot to talk about, because it's happening all the time, there's developments all the time."

Once niche subjects largely ignored by the mainstream media, business and economics have taken centre stage in recent years as global financial crises had made topics like sovereign debt and credit swaps dinner party talk.

In Britain, BBC journalist Robert Peston's 'How Do We Fix This Mess?' is the latest of many books on the subject, while popular economics works like Nassim Nicholas Taleb's 'Black Swan' and Nouriel Roubini's 'Crisis Economics' have topped bestseller lists internationally.

The City Book Fair organizers are hoping that four days of speeches on the likes of short-term trading techniques, starting a hedge fund and resolving LIBOR issues will woo around 500 financial professionals to the Bishopsgate Institute, a library and culture centre in the heart of London's financial district. The model was based on Britain's annual spring Hay-on-Wye literary festival, Clements said.

"We took a bit of inspiration from the Hay book festival, which is structured around selling books, but the authors of the books give talks. We thought nothing in the City has been done like this before and it's an area where there is demand," he said.

Speakers at the Nov 12-15 fair will include journalist and 'The Money Machine' author Philip Coggan, economist and writer Roger Bootle, 'What Does China Think?' author Mark Leonard and ex-Financial Services Authority head Howard Davies, who has written a book about the 2008 financial crisis.

Alistair Overeem's next fight likely against Junior dos Santos vs Cain Velasquez winner at UFC 155

Although he was suspended for failing a drug test that torpedoed the main event of UFC 146 back in May, it appears Alistair Overeem will be receiving a title shot immediately upon his return to the Octagon.

It's nice when a plan comes together. The problem for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and its President, Dana White, is that almost never actually happens.

But that doesn't stop them from looking ahead to the future and making sure they're prepared.

That's what they're doing with Alistair Overeem, whose suspension for a failed drug test back in May comes up in just over two months at the end of December. That means he'll be eligible to apply for his license and a few months down the road after a full training camp, he'll be ready to fight.

But against who?

According to White at the UFC 153 post-fight press conference last night (Oct. 14), it's likely "The Reem" will fight the winner of the Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez heavyweight championship bout scheduled for UFC 155 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Fair? Maybe; maybe not. But it's entirely possible that late March or early April will feature the heavyweight championship fight we were supposed to get in May of this year before Overeem's drug test torpedoed the UFC 146 main event.

Better late than never, right?
